1. - La Spezia Program for Italian Studies

The Land
La Spezia is located in one of the most uncontaminated areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Only few kilometres from the Cinque Terre, five miles of rocky coast among two promontories, thousands of kilometres of dry-laid stone walls, five small towns castled up on stone spurs in minuscule creeks. For their history and their position, the Cinque Terre have not suffered a massive expansion. The vineyards, typical of this area, have contributed to create a unique landscape with dry-laid stone walls, winding paths, enchanting beaches between cliffs and clear waters. Not only sea, the Cinque Terre offer beautiful footpaths with take breathing view, churches, oratories and old castles, diving, food and wines of first quality.
The Cinque Terre are National Park and UNESCO protected territory since 1997. Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Manarola, Vernazza, Monterosso are the five villages that form the Cinque Terre, suspended between sea and land on sheer cliffs upon the beautiful sea. (www.lecinqueterre.org/eng/)

The Center for Cultural Research and University Studies(CCRUS)
The Center (www.stl.sp.it) builds upon the work of two important organizations:
the STL-Sistema Turistico Locale and The Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio della Spezia.
The STL- Sistema Turistico Locale, founded in 2003 , is the most important institution for the development of tourism related to local culture.
The Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio della Spezia, founded in 1992, is always been a major source of funding for social and cultural programs in La Spezia.

The Center works to create opportunities for cultural exchange between Usa, Canada, Europe and Italy. The Center operates with the support of government and private enterprises organizing cultural events and courses in Italian language and culture. The Center is fully equipped for academic work with library and internet facilities.
